What You Will Do
The Fire Inspector I plays a role in performing residential and commercial fire inspections in Carroll County. We are looking for an individual with experience with fire and life safety code. You will apply your knowledge to new construction and renovated projects throughout the County and its municipalities. Your day-to-day will include important decisions to analyze construction, interpret plans, and verify compliance with codes adopted by Carroll County and the State Fire Marshal's Office, keeping citizens safe.
Essential Duties
- Perform inspections, read plans, and compile reports for residential and commercial projects.
- Enforce current regulations of Carroll County Ordinances, International Building Code, International Residential Code, NFPA Life Safety Code and State Fire Prevention Code.
- Investigate complaints of illegal construction.
- Assist the State Fire Marshal's Office.
- Ensure all work is complete and timely to support department goals. Evaluate feedback and procedures to improve efficiency.
- Invite collaboration and seek learning opportunities. Proactively assist peers to create a supportive work environment.

You Might Be a Good Fit If
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or general education diploma (GED)
- Five or more years of related experience, including experience with fire and life safety code
- A comparable amount of education and experience may be substituted for the minimum requirement.
Licenses
Certifications
- MFRI Fire Inspector I certification or ICC equivalent (or must obtain within 6 months of employment)
Additional Information
- May be required to work outside of standard hours.
Working Conditions
- Must wear appropriate PPE as required.
- Daily exposure to potentially adverse weather conditions.
- Work includes daily physical activity: standing/walking for long hours, lifting, and related activities.
